DIY Wool Dryer Balls and All Natural Laundry Tips on EverythingEtsy.com

Are you interested in more all-natural laundry solutions?  Trying to stay away from yucky chemicals whenever possible?  You will love this!

These DIY Wool Dryer Balls are an awesome project that’s quick and easy!  That works for me!

Make a batch of them and share some with family and friends.

Make Wool Dryer Balls - Tutorial on EverythingEtsy.com

First, let me start off by sharing some of the benefits of using wool dryer balls with your laundry.  I could go on an on, but these reasons might give you that extra push to make some today…

  • They’re all-natural!  I love that!
  • Shorter drying time {yay!}
  • Save money on dryer sheets {and skip the chemicals}
  • Reduce wrinkles
  • Reduce static
  • Soften clothes naturally

They’re the perfect all-natural solution to regular dryer sheets and you can add essential oils to suit your family’s needs.   Use Lavender or try Peppermint and Lemon together for a super fresh smell that will make your whole house smell great.

Wool Dryer Ball - Colorful Wool Yarn on EverytingEtsy.com

Start with beautiful 100% wool yarn.  You will be able to make 2-3 out of most yarn skeins.

This is Patons Classic Wool Roving in Aran and Yellow.  The colorful mixed skein is Patons ColorWul in Countryside.

Start by wrapping the yarn around a couple fingers 6 or 7 times.  Then switch directions and wrap some more. Smile

Keep wrapping and turning and it will start to take shape.  You can really take your time and make your pattern even, but I go with the fast method…lol!  Wrap until your yarn ball is almost the size of a tennis ball.

Then take the end of your yarn and pull it through the ball with a crochet hook.

Slip it inside the pantyhose and tie a knot.

Wash it in hot water and dry it 3-4 times.  This will give you a nice felt look and feel.

Cut away the pantyhose and you’re finished.

Before you use it for the first time you’ll want to add 6 drops of quality essential oils.  Quality oil is much stronger, so you use less.

They look pretty cool, don’t they?

How to Use Wool Dryer Balls

Simply add a few to your dryer along with your load of wet laundry…turn it on and walk away.  Your house will start to smell amazing due to the essential oils you added to the dryer ball and your laundry will smell super fresh.  They bounce around in there and do all the work for you.

Since the wool dryer balls are bouncing around in there separating the laundry, it reduces the amount of time it takes to dry…saving you money.

Reuse them over and over again.

Don’t have time to make them right now?  You can buy some dryer balls right here.

Soap Nuts - All Natural Laundry Tips on EverythingEtsy.com

More All-Natural Laundry Tips

Years ago we were trying to find an all-natural laundry detergent to help with an allergy situation.  We found soap nuts!  Soap Nuts are dried soapberries.  They clean like crazy without the chemicals!  Soap Nuts contains saponins for a natural cleaning alternative.  They smell fresh and even bubble up!  {You can also make a soap mixture with these to clean around the house!}

I add 6-8 berries to a small drawstring bag and toss them in the washer.  You can reuse the same bag 5-6 times!  Try them…you’ll love them!

I loved them from the start and I’ve even checked into having my own tree!  But, they’re super slow growing so I decided to just keep buying them.

I hope you found this helpful!  We can all use a few less chemicals in our life, right?

~Kim

    Do you leave the pantyhose on them? Or take them off?

      Hi Kylie!

      Just cut them off once they’ve been through the laundry a few times to make the yarn felt together.

      Enjoy!

    What essential oil scent do you use? Is it necessary or can you just leave them as is and use with no scent? I don’t like my laundry to have a scent. I usually wash with vinegar so I don’t have to use anything in the dryer but I thought these might be nice just not sure I want them to smell like anything. Thanks!

    Do you wash them by hand 3-4 times or run them through the washer and dryer 3-4 times?

    Thanks for the lovely tutorial, I adore it, the dryer balls are so efficient and natural, it’s great. I really enjoy trying new natural solutions for the home and garden, and your blog often provides posts which are quite helpful.A great idea for a natural laundry detergent I can offer, is to use castile soap and washing soda. Just grate 4 bars of castile soap, mix with 2 cups of washing soda, add a few drops of essential oil of choice and place in a waterproof container. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load.
