Get Clutter Under Control!

We need to rid ourselves of Craft Supply Clutter!

Have you ever noticed the way you feel when you’re sitting in a clean, clutter free area. I know I feel more inspired and ready to make something pretty. When there’s a mess it can affect the way you feel, and it hurts you’re creativity! You know I’m right.

We need to sell or giveaway our stockpile of crafting materials…let’s destash! Hmmmm. I think that might be the best idea for organizing a craft area yet. Sometimes there’s just too much stuff!!!

When the boxes are overflowing and the baskets are bulging…it’s time!

I must admit I have been know to hoard fabrics and craft supplies until they won’t fit in the cabinet anymore. It can be so hard to let go of something you bought and still might need {or think you need} one day. But will you find it when you need it? Will you even remember that you have it?

In an earlier post I asked about your organizational challenges and tips. Here’s a couple of the comments:

A challenge…

Having too much stuff is our main problem.
Its hard to separate and organize everything when there is so much of it in our craft room. I walk in to clean it, get overwhelmed and leave.{clarkmurdock}

Can you relate to this?

And some great advice…

Yup, craft supply organization is on my list. The biggest things I need to do {and these aren’t really organization, but lowering the number of items to put away helps with organization} :

  1. 1. Donate uninspiring supplies to kids’ art programs, retirement centers, etc.
  2. 2. Only buy what I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE…instead of getting sucked into deals, trends, etc. {http://CatherineMarissa.etsy.com}

I love the advice about only buying what you love! Ask yourself that the next time you find an awesome sale at the craft store…you could just be adding to your clutter!

If you are having a hard time organizing, you might have too much!

  • One way to curb your clutter is to sell the unwanted supplies on Etsy. Bundle up similar items and sell them to your fellow crafters. It’s a great way to make a little money and thin out your supplies at the same time!
  • Give away supplies to friends or neighbors. You might have collected some of your supplies this way…well pass it on!
  • Donate to art programs or schools. Kids could have a blast with the stamp set you no longer need!

If you notice one thing about pretty photos of craft areas…they aren’t packed with supplies!

Let’s clear the clutter!

Please share any tips you use to keep your clutter under control…I can always use help in this area!

    Thank you thank you thank you for doing all of these posts on decluttering and organizing. Just the pretty pictures inspired me so much that I have FINALLY completed the organization of all my crafts. I actually feel inspired to make things now that I know I have so much. What have I been doing all these years!? Thanks again, you are awesome (now to start doing the decorating with scraps…I want to do that!)

    My husband and I have been on a major decluttering spree lately. Our rule of thumb has been: Would we take it with us if we moved really far away? If it’s not worth packing into a box, then it’s probably not worth the space it’s taking up in our home!

    I totally agree with only buying what you LOVE; learned from experience…I had bought a lot of paper just because it was on sale for so cheap. Now I’m kicking myself because I actually don’t like a lot of it. Isn’t that awful?! I’m slowly working through and purging, keeping things I know I’ll use. I can’t say I won’t make the same mistake again, but at least now I know! 😉

    Love the decluttering advice – I’m in the middle of decluttering/reorganizing my office/craft room – it became the catchall to everything when company arrived or I got some new fun stuff to try out. When I have left over bits of ribbon that are too small for bows etc. I give them to my daughters class for them to use for their art projects.

    We try to purge pretty often around here. With 2 little girls it doesn’t take long to accumulate a lot of stuff.

    Love the organizing ideas.
