Homemade Dog Treats – Breath Mint Recipe

DIY Dog Breath Mints - Dog Treats Recipe - EverythingEtsy.com

Homemade Dog Breath Mints are a really good thing! Dogs love these treats and they make their breath fresher…that’s a win-win, for sure!

We treat our dogs like family around here.  They might even get more spoiled than the kids…ha!  I know I’m not alone in my love of dogs, and I’d love to hear about your sweet pets in the comments!

When you realize just how inexpensive and easy these DIY breath mints are to make, you’ll never want to spend those little pet boutique prices again!

I LOVE the way these turned out, and I plan on making them on a regular basis.  At least I’ll know exactly what they’re eating.  They jump up and down for them so I’m pretty sure that means they’re yummy!

Homemade Dog Treats – Breath Mints

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup reduced fat milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup peanut butter {smooth}
  • 2 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1/2-3/4 cup chopped fresh Basil
  • 10 drops of doTERRA Peppermint Essential Oil {It’s the best!}

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.

Whisk the milk, one egg and peanut butter together in a large bowl.

Add the flour and baking soda to create a lovely dough.  You may need to use your hands to work in all the flour.

Blend in the chopped Basil and Peppermint Oil.

Flour a surface to roll out your dough.  Cut out shapes like dogs, bones or make mini circle breath mint treats for small dogs.  1/4” thickness is awesome…but a little thicker works.

Make a quick egg wash by whisking together one egg and a couple teaspoons of water.  Brush a thin coat on your dog treats before putting them in the oven.

I used an Airbake Insulated Cookie Sheet and parchment paper while baking. {These are two of my favorite things!}  They equal perfect baking and no mess…that works!

Bake 15 minutes on one side and flip to bake 10 more minutes on the other side. {Don’t forget to brush on egg wash before baking!}

Remove and cool.

Store them in an airtight container for a week or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

**I only use doTERRA Essential Oils because of the amazing quality of them…and I’ve been using them for years!  Click here to read more about trying them or selling doTERRA as a side business.

Meet my awesome dogs…

My dog Sherlock - EverythingEtsy

This is Sherlock!  He’s a stunning Plott Hound.  I wish you could see all of his beautiful coat in this picture, but the colors are crazy pretty.

We were on the way back from camping in the mountains and my husband asked if we wanted to stop at an animal shelter we just passed.  The obvious answer was “YES!”  He whipped our camper around and we adopted Sherlock.  He was a very, very skinny and small puppy, but now he’s as healthy as could be!

Sherlock has been the best friend to my son since that moment!

Pepper the Pug on EverythingEtsy.com

This is the newest addition to our family…Pepper!  She’s a sweet pug.

Pepper was a stray dog that was found on my mom’s street on the outskirts of town.  The neigborhood posted signs and kept checking online to see if anyone was missing such an awesome dog.  A few days went by and she wasn’t claimed, so I brought her home.  Well, the next day a sign was posted miles away describing her.  I was heartbroken to say the least.  My husband spoke to the owners and worked out a deal to buy her from them…he’s a keeper.

Now Pepper happily sits on my lap as I write this post.  We were meant for each other…ha!

    Thanks for sharing! Are there other essential oils that are good for dogs?

      Lavender, frankincense, copaiba and several others are safe for dogs. Do not use tea tree or wintergreen, and be careful with “hot” oils; you want to use a carrier oil with hot oils.

    LOL! I got stalled on the Plott hound. My brother calls them “Hog Dogs”..he has an area way back behind his house, with pens full of those Plott hounds. Those are his babies. They all have their own tracker, and are very well taken care of. He doesn’t really hunt hogs with them, he mostly lets them chase squirrels, or coons. He has several hog traps set out, just to catch hogs though. He caught a huge Mama wolf and her 8 little babies in one of those traps. He made a pet out of her, and gave all her babies away. I just thought it was cool that you have a Plott hound, because those things are very expensive. Especially, if they are a pure bloodline, like my brothers. Your baby looks like it is, I cant imagine it ending up at a shelter.

      I just learned this lesson after making these for my dogs. They have been sick all day with diarrhea and vomiting. I’m so upset. I used this recipe because my dog had horrible breath.
