Easy Crochet Hat–Free Pattern

Free Crochet Hat Pattern on EverythingEtsy.com

Are you looking for a quick little crochet project to whip up right now?  This easy crochet hat pattern will help you use up that yarn stash you’ve been hoarding forever.

If you know how to crochet rows you can make a hat.  Working in the back stitch gives it a nice ribbed look.  It takes a little practice on the first few stitches, but you’ll get the hang of it in a couple minutes.

Pick your favorite color and let’s get started.  You can finish it in an evening while watching a movie…now that’s my kind of project for sure.

Supplies…

Medium {4} Yarn – My favorite is Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand

Crochet Hook – US H8/5mm

Plastic Crochet Needle

Here’s how you can make one of these today…

Pattern…

Chain 40 to start.

To begin the 2nd row chain 1 and start your stitch into the second stitch.  You will do all your stitches in the back loops. {See the image below.}

Crochet Hat Stitch Instructions - EverythingEtsy.com

Once you get the hang of stitching in the back stitch you will be unstoppable!

Crochet single stitches to the end, chain 1 and turn to start the next row.

Crochet rows until it measures about 15 inches wide.  This should be enough for an adult hat.

Fold it in half like the photo above.  You will want the side that will be the inside of the hat facing out.

Stitch the side closed with single stiches or slip stitches all the way up.

Once the side is together take the plastic yarn need and a piece of yarn to loosely stitch around the top edge.  Then cinch it tight to create the top of the hat.

Finish the top by sewing the remaining hole together at the top.  I squeeze the top together and add several stitches.  Then tie a knot.

Flip the hat right side out and fold up the bottom.

Trim any stray ends and you’re finished.

This is such a fun and rewarding project! Hats make great gifts and they can even be donated to many organizations.  It will take less than a skein of yarn.

I’ve had such a great time making these that I didn’t even want to stop and post about them.  But, this pattern is way to easy to not share with the world.

Spread the love one hat at a time.

Everyone could use a little handmade goodness!  Please share this post if you enjoyed it!

I have been wanting the directions to make a hat like this forever, Thank you! Now that I have one can you tell me how I would make one that would fit my grandsons that is 2 and 4 right now. I tend to crochet kind of tight so I’m not sure what size crochet hook to use to make the size come out right either. Could you help with that?

    Thank you!

I made some of these decades ago, and then forgot all about them. Now I’m going to use up some of my stash by making some of these. Thank you for sharing the pattern.

What needs to be about 15 inches? The folded piece or the piece before it’s folded? Flat it is way to small, folded it is way to big. My first hat and I am not get anything to work! Please direct me, as I am frustrated, and ready to give up.

Thanks for stopping by, and you have a great question! My mom always measured my head and sent the measurements to my grandma for hats. This hat will fit a head that’s about 21″ without losing the shape of the stitches. So, if you get the measurements for your grandchildren you can lay the rows of crochet flat under the tape measure on a table. Pull on both sides to stretch it to the child’s head size. See if you are stretching it too much where the row details really loose their look or not. Just know that a 21″ adult hat is made with about 15″ or 16″ and it stretches nice to stay on and fold up at the bottom. You’ll do fine if you get their measurements and check it against the tape measure on a table. Let me know how it goes! I’d love to know what sizes work.

I would love to try my hand at this pattern. I’ve only crocheted hats starting with a magic circle. The only issue is, I am having a hard time visualizing how to “loosely stitch around the top edge” and “then cinch”. Can you give me more detailed instructions?
    Thanks,
    Pam

Well, it’s hard to explain but you can think of it as a giant running stitch around the top circle. Then when you pull it tight it will gather up and you won’t have a hole at the top. 🙂

      Hope that helps!

I love this pattern! I just used it to make a hat for my dad for Christmas. I used a larger hook and less chains, but the idea is the same. Thank you!

These are single stitches worked into the back loop of each stitch in the last row. So, you don’t work in the two loops like you normally would. This gives it such a different look. Just read through the directions again and see if that helps.

      Have fun!

Hi Kim! Thanks for sharing your pattern! Do you know (approximately) the yardage required for the adult hat?

I would like to know approximately how much yarn for the adult size as well. Did you use a full skein of Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand?

Hi Janet! Thanks for stopping by! I didn’t think about someone needing to print out the pattern. I’ll keep that in mind for future projects, but there is a printable pattern for this one. 🙂

This pattern is very similar to one that I am working with now. Instead of SC across all the way, I hdc across instead. The rest of it is the same!! I love it, because it is a quick pattern and my grandsonsare patiently for me to finish them.
