There’s a chill in the air this morning and I am dreaming about beautiful quilts!  There’s something about the time and care that goes into a quilt, not to mention the fabulous fabric, that really makes them a treasure.

I actually don’t have much quilting ability, but I did manage to make a super simple quilt last year and it has turned out to be a family favorite.  One day I’ll have to take some classes or talk someone into to teaching me how to make beautiful quilts like in the ones in this post.

I’m constantly in awe over quilter’s ability to mix fabric of all different colors and patterns and come up with stunning results.  Quilts are simply a work of art.  Oh, and the keep you cozy at the same time…awesome!

The thought of having every little crafty bit of paper, string and fabric all organized and ready when a moment of creativity strikes…oh, what a dream.

Organizing supplies always gives me new ideas and makes me realize what cool stuff I already have available.  Sometimes I should just shop around my own closet before heading out to the store!  Am I the only one that ends up with 5 rolls of white ribbon???  I think not.

Fabric is one of the biggest challenges!!!

There’s always a problem when you don’t want to throw away beautiful scraps of fabric.  I Like Orange has an awesome solution.

Sorting in jars with like colors and covering the lid with matching fabric is super smart, easy and cheap!!

If you have a bunch of fabric {oh, I wish} around you might want to try organizing with foam boards.  You can easily secure your fabric right to the board with stick pins.  The Little Green Bean shares all the creative details.

Isn’t this a dreamy bunch of wool roving? I wanted to take it all home!

The other day I was lucky enough to notice that the Southwest Florida Quilt Festival was going on at the Convention Center here in Punta Gorda.  It’s so close I can walk!

This is my first quilt festival and I was amazed at the crowd.  It was packed full of people of all ages…no offense, but I thought quilting was more popular among retired people that have more time.  I’ve noticed since having this blog that quilting is hot!

I love all the designer quilting fabrics and I even made a very simple quilt of my own last year.

They had a huge silent auction and I decided to bid on this fun hula girl quilt, but of course I didn’t get it.

I learned that taking photos at a quilt show is super challenging, and I know it has to be a ton of work for all the vendors to set up all their fabulous fabric.  They do a great job of displaying quilt kits and new fabric.  I’m always attracted to those Moda jelly rolls and layer cakes…love them!

Here’s a fun quilt that had to take FOREVER to finish…very cute!

Once my feet were starting to hurt I decided to walk home.  Our weather has been outstanding for a couple weeks here so we walk whenever we can.

I found a couple flowers on the way home that I would love to have in my yard, but I don’t know what they are…can you help???

They are both vines growing on a fence and the flowers were just beautiful!  The red ones were so big!

These purple ones were growing right next to the red ones.  Any ideas on the names of these?

Oh, and let’s not forget what I bought at the quilt show…

A sweet little apron for $10! I couldn’t pass it up!

Designer fabrics rule when it comes to making a project stand out!  I was thinking about Spring when I came across these…

• Hullabaloo and Hoopla – {Say that three times in a row…Ha!} The colors are so vibrant and cheerful!

• Paradise Jamaica Hibiscus {Moda Batik} – You have to love a fabric with that name!
• This French General fabric would make a fabulous pillow…I love words on fabric!

Since I’ve been blogging I’ve found that bloggers are so very generous when it comes to sharing free tutorials, and I feel as though it’s time for me to give back to the blogging community! So here it goes, my very first tutorial…a Fabric Kindle Cover Tutorial!

Materials

• Outside Fabric: (1) 9” x 17.5″
• Cotton Flannel (Lining): (1) 9” x 17.5”
• Quilt Batting: (1) 9” x 17.5”
• Binding Fabric: 2.25” x 45”
• Thread
• Water Soluble Pen
• Velcro (optional): 2 ½”

Kindle measurements: 8” x 5.3” (per www.amazon.com)

1. Cut out three rectangles, using a cotton print fabric for the outside fabric (9” x 17.5”), quilt batting for the middle layer (9” x 17.5”), and a solid cotton flannel fabric for the lining (9” x 17.5”), as the flannel will not scratch your Kindle.

2. Place the outside fabric with the wrong side facing up, quilt batting, and cotton flannel (lining) with right side facing up.

3. With a water soluble pen, draw a horizontal line 6” from the bottom of the outside fabric and stitch on top of the inked line, creating the Kindle pocket. Note- if the outside fabric is too dark to see the water soluble marking (as shown above), draw the horizontal line on the cotton flannel (lining).

4. Fold and press the binding in half lengthwise. With raw edges matching, sew the binding along the top edge of the pocket with a ¼” seam allowance. Fold over the remaining binding and stitch.

5. Fold the bottom of the Kindle cover at the 6” line, with right side facing up, forming a pocket. Baste around the three exposed sides with a 1/8” seam allowance.

6. Beginning at the bottom left hand corner, fold up the binding ½”, creating a ‘finished’ edge and attach the binding with a ¼” seam allowance to the right side of the outside fabric. When approaching the corners, make sure to stop ¼” from the corner, lift your needle and presser foot and fold the binding up onto itself. Fold the binding down again, aligning the raw edges and resume stitching.

7. Fold over the remaining binding, enclosing the raw edges, and complete with a straight stitch, making sure to neatly miter the corners.

8. As an option, Velcro can be added to insure that the Kindle is secure.Stitch the male side of the Velcro ¾” from the top of the pocket, centered. Repeat with the female side of the Velcro 2 5/8” from the top of the flap.

9. Enjoy!
