DIY Summer Hair Accessories Rock!

Create your own hair accessories this summer and add a bit of pretty to your hair without all the fuss of fixing it…that works for me!  My hair is long and summer can be hot and humid in Florida, so I look for any and every way I can to put my hair up.

Score an A+ with this sweet teacher’s necklace!

Share your appreciation with a handmade gift that’s sure to touch any teacher’s heart like they’ve touched yours in the past year.  This necklace is simple and cute!  Create it with your child so they can customize it to fit their style.

Here’s the supplies you’ll need…

• Mod Podge {gloss}
• Scrapbook stickers
• Wooden circles
• Circle metal jewelry finding
• Colorful scrapbook paper {shown below}
• Basic Necklaces
• Paint
• Brushes
• Glue – E6000 {shown below}

These supplies can easily be found at your local craft store.  You might even have a few of these items at home already.

Start by painting your charm with a beautiful color.  You can sand it…or not.  I didn’t and it turned out fine.

Let it dry and paint a second coat.  Be sure to use thin coats and paint the edge.

Print out or type your saying on regular white copy paper.  Copy it and reduce the size to fit your charm. 

Then copy it on you textured scrapbook paper.

Once your charm is dry you can add your saying with a dab of Mod Podge. 

This will hold it in place while you work with it.

Wait a couple minutes and then apply a thick layer of Mod Podge to it. 

I went over the front and the edge of the charm. I only put one coat of Mod Podge.

Once your charm is dry you can add the jewelry finding the the back with your glue.  {This glue is very strong and only takes a drop.}

Let it dry a few minutes and then add a little something special.

I used a shiny button scrapbook sticker, but I glued it to the top.

It’s simple and sweet!  What do you think?

This Simple Bloom Necklace is so easy to make you’ll want to make a few at a time!  I seriously can’t believe I never thought to try this before now.  It only takes a few minutes to make and it’s the perfect DIY gift for mothers, teachers, friends, sisters…you get the idea, right?! 

I almost decided to not do this post because it was so simple, but I hope you you will find a bit of DIY inspiration from it.

It all started when I was working on another project and walking around my local craft store.  They didn’t have everything I needed, so I started to wander the aisles aimlessly…does that ever happen to you?

Anyway, I ran across the prettiest scrapbook stickers made with fabric, felt, and a bit of sparkle.  Well, I just had to make SOMETHING with them…but what?

I didn’t actually know what I was going to do with them until I got home.  I noticed there were two large flowers with matching shapes and the colors looked great next to the new necklaces I bought.  I thought I might be able to stick one on plastic or wood and make a charm.

Then I had that “Aha moment” when I realized I could stick them back to back…super cool!

Here’s the supplies you’ll need to make your own…

• Fabric Scrapbook Stickers
• Jewelry Findings
• A basic necklace {I ended up using a green satin cord necklace…not shown above.}
• Glue {optional}

Take two stickers of the same size and shape and sandwich the jewelry finding between them.  These stickers lined up perfectly.  You could add a bit of glue if you prefer.

This is what you get…I love it!

Make a couple more charms to add to your necklace.  You can trim them a bit if they don’t line up exactly.

And here’s another cool thing about this necklace…you can flip it!

Wear it with the blue flower showing or the green.  It’s so simple and fun!

I honestly got such satisfaction from making this because it turned out so pretty with such little effort!  You gotta love that!!

Your children could make them…anyone can make them in minutes!

One tip…make sure your charm findings will slide over the pre-made necklace findings when you purchase them.  Or you can make your own necklace with satin cord and jewelry findings.  Whatever works best for you.

Hand Stamped Initial Necklace {DIY Gift}

Learn how to make your own hand stamped jewelry and create amazing gifts for any occasion.  It’s the perfect DIY gift for yourself {ha!}, Mother’s Day, new moms, graduation gifts, birthdays, Christmas and any other holiday Hallmark can think up!

I wear one of these necklaces almost every day and I get so many compliments!  I’ve been selling them on Etsy for a few years, and I thought I’d share how I make them with you! 

I’ll also give you some tips and information on buying supplies that should save you a ton of time and money getting started.

Here’s an example of a “Mother’s Necklace” that’s always been a popular gift.  You can add as many charms as you would like, or just have one initial charm for your name. 

This is the kind of gift that’s cherished forever!   

Here’s a peek at my supplies…

• Letter stamp set
• Hammer
• Steel bench block
• Sterling silver ball chain necklaces
• Sterling silver blanks {hearts and circles}
• Open Jump Rings
• Sterling Silver Head Pins – 2 in.
• Freshwater pearls
• Metal hole punch pliers
• Round tip pliers
• Wire cutters
• Long-nose pliers
• Sharpie marker
• Steel Wool

I usually work with sterling silver blanks, but it’s best to practice on less expensive metal until you get the feel for stamping with the right pressure.  Trust me…you will be sad if you mess up a silver charm.

These are my favorite letters…they’re a lowercase typewriter font.  You can find a million different fonts, but I think this one is really easy to read when stamping.

Here’s how I make a hand stamped necklace…{with lots of step-by-step photos}

I start with my sterling silver circle blank and rough it up a bit with the steel wool.  Of course this step is optional.  If you prefer a shiny blank, just skip this step!

Wipe any dust off of the blank and place it flat on the steel bench block.  You can secure the edge of it with a piece of tape if you like…it’s up to you.   

Make sure you are holding your stamp with the letter facing you {the one written on the stamp}.

Center it and hold the stamp straight up and down so it stamps evenly.

Take your hammer and give it a good whack!

I’ve read about using more than one hit, but I only use one.  You can’t be afraid to really hit it!  This is where practicing with another metal will help you to know how hard and what angle works best for you and your stamps.  Keep in mind that some metals are softer, so you will need to adjust to that a bit. {It’s really not as hard as I’m making it sound…lol!}

Take a Fine Black Sharpie and fill in your letter.  You don’t have to be perfect, but make sure you really get the ink down in the grooves.

Let it dry a bit and the use your steel wool to lightly rub the charm until you only have ink down in the grooves of the letter.  You can touch it up a bit and repeat this step if you need to.  Then I use a little jewelry polish cloth to brighten it up a bit.

Punch a hole at the top using your hole punch pliers.

Attach your sterling silver open jump ring.

Slide it on your sterling silver necklace and stop right there if you want!  It’ sweet and simple!

You can go on to make a pearl charm…

I use freshwater pearls that I buy from a local jewelry shop.  They sell them by the strand, so I like to really check them out to find a size that I like.  You can go really big or little with these!

I start with a 2 inch sterling silver head pin and make a loop around the tip of my round pliers.

While holding it right there I take my long nose pliers and start to wrap the head pin around to the top of the pearl.  I usually make 2-3 loops and cut the remaining off with the wire cutters. 

Add the sterling silver jump ring and you have a pearl charm!  That was easy wasn’t it?!

You could also mix it up a bit by using any bead or crystals for birthstones.

There you go!  That’s all you need to do to make your own fabulous hand stamped jewelry at the fraction of the cost. 

Once you start stamping you will want to make everything with a stamp…lol!

Lavender sachets are my favorite!  I’ve sold hundred of these beautiful sachets over the last couple years on Etsy…they make the best gifts EVER!  Lavender sachets smell fabulous and you can make them out your favorite designer fabric.  It’s an awesome way to use up those pretty fabric scraps, too!

I thought you might like to make some for yourself…and everyone you know.  Trust me,  once you make them for someone they will ask for more.

This simple sewing project is great for Mother’s Day, teachers, thank you gifts, housewarming gifts…you get the idea.  You can make a bunch of them and to have on hand and ready for the next birthday that sneaks up on you.  So, stock up!

Linen sachets have always been one of my favorites…they match everything and make great wedding favors!

Here’s how to sew up a batch of beautiful sachets for yourself…

• Cut 5” fabric squares {I usually cut a bunch at once}
• Stack two squares with the right side facing inside.

• Start sewing about 3/4 of the way down one side and continue around until you have a couple inches left and backstitch with your machine.  You want to leave a big enough opening to work with, so sew slowly.
• I sew about 1/8” to 1/4” in from the edge.

• Cut the corners off carefully. This helps the corners look nice when it’s finished.
• Flip the sachet to show the right side of the fabric on the outside.
• Flatten a bit and make sure your corners are nice by using your finger to push on the corners from the inside.
• Sew around the edge again leaving the opening the same size.
• I roll up some cardstock to use as a funnel and add my dried lavender using a little scoop.  {You can buy dried lavender right here on Amazon.}

• Be sure not to add too much or it will be hard to sew closed!!
• Shake your sachet to settle the lavender and then hold it carefully while you sew up the opening.

That’s it!

Once you start making these you will want to make a ton!  I have them all over the house and in my closets.  I’ve thrown them in the car…they make it smell wonderful!

You can make small ones to throw in the dryer.  Your clothes will have a nice light scent.  I’ve used them up to 10 times in my dryer.

Get creative with them.  Use embroidered designs, mix and match fabric, use quilted fabric…whatever.  They all look and smell beautiful!

I’ve made hanging sachets like this one…I love turtles.  I usually bundle up two or three sachets with ribbon or twine.

These remind me of little pillows. When you’re finished each sachet measures about 4 inches.

Sometimes I don’t sew around the edge the second time and I get a a chunky sachet {like the linen sachets near the beginning of this post}.  It’s a nice natural look with linen fabric.

I seriously love pom poms of all sizes and colors…really, who wouldn’t???  I made a fun pom pom heart pillow last month and I promised to follow up with the how-to on making these perfect little pom poms. 

Here it is!  It’s simple, but I enjoy learning from tutorials with step-by-step photos and I hope you will too.  I like to get stuff right the first time!

WARNING:  Once you make one you will make a million!  Proceed at your own risk!

This is my trusty little Pom Pom Maker!  We make beautiful pom poms together! 

My all-time favorite yarn is Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice and Vanna’s Choice Baby Yarn.  The color selection is perfect and it’s super soft, but not too fuzzy!  I save all my yarn scraps for these pom poms and end up with a ton of colorful pom poms that are perfect for decorating packages or adding a little fun to a project.

The pom pom maker is a little strange looking, but once you understand how it works you will love it! 

The first step on your pom pom making adventure is to open it up like the photo above.

You don’t need to tie a knot to start.  Just hold the yarn and start wrapping it around and around.

There really aren’t any special rules.  Keep wrapping until one side of your pom pom maker is super full like this one.

Close it up with your yarn near the beginning of the next side.

Wrap it up and close it.

Time to turn this yarn into a pom pom! 

Start on one side and cut right down the center making sure to cut ever string of yarn.  The tool makes it easy to get your scissors in there and cut evenly.  It only takes a few second {well maybe 10} to cut each side. 

Like my cool scissor?  These have been my favorite ones for years…Fiskars Spring Action Scissors!

Here’s what it looks like once you’re done cutting!  Cute, right?

Take a small piece of yarn and tie a knot {a tight one} around the pom pom.  Your yarn will fit right in a groove to make it extra easy.

Open up the pom pom maker.

Pull it apart to reveal your fluffy pom pom!

Trim it up to make it a bit more beautiful!  Sometimes I leave the long strand from my knot tying so I can attach them to something easily.  Or you can cut it to have a perfect little pom pom.

You can run a strand of yarn {with a big plastic needle} through them to make pretty garland or decorations.  I’ll be sharing that soon!

I hope you try making a few pom poms soon!  You will love it!
