<p>Hi, I&#8217;m Vanessa from <a href="http://punkinpattern.blogspot.com">Punkin Patterns</a>.  I&#8217;m thrilled to be here today on Everything Etsy to share with you this great tutorial.</p>
<p><strong>What child wouldn&#8217;t love to have their castle guarded by the Queen&#8217;s Guard?</strong>  With their bright red coats, brass buttons and large bearskin hats these foot soldiers guard the castle from any enemy.  These soldiers are very easy to make.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers1.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pegsoldiers1" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers1_thumb.jpg" alt="pegsoldiers1" width="490" height="284" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>You&#8217;ll need some wooden peg dolls you can get at any craft store, acrylic paint in (red, black, white and gold), small brushes, and 1&#8243; black pom poms.</p>
<p>Start by marking the doll with a pencil to mark the bottom of the red coat.  Mark it about 3/4&#8243; from the bottom or so.  Mark a neck line also.  Paint this section red.  You may need a few coats (no pun intended) to get the red coat to look nice.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers2.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pegsoldiers2" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers2_thumb.jpg" alt="pegsoldiers2" width="490" height="284" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Paint the bottom of the soldier black (the pants), then add a white belt a little up from the bottom of the red coat.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers3.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pegsoldiers3" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers3_thumb.jpg" alt="pegsoldiers3" width="490" height="284" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Add a row of brass (or gold) buttons down the center front of the coat.  Then add thin red lines down each of the sides of the pants.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers4.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pegsoldiers4" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers4_thumb.jpg" alt="pegsoldiers4" width="490" height="284" border="0" /></a></p>
<p align="center">Glue a 1&#8243; black pom pom on top of the peg dolls&#8217; head.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers5A.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pegsoldiers5A" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers5A_thumb.jpg" alt="pegsoldiers5A" width="490" height="647" border="0" /></a></p>
<p align="center">Lastly, add some facial features if you like.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers61.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;" title="pegsoldiers6 (1)" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pegsoldiers61_thumb.jpg" alt="pegsoldiers6 (1)" width="490" height="318" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Now you have your soldiers ready to guard the queen, castle or treasure!</strong></p>

<p>Valentine’s day is such a fun time of year, but it can sneak up on you quick.  This year I’m ready! <strong> I’ve decorated my door with this sweet felt heart wreath.</strong>  You know I love felt and this turned out so nice that I’m sure I’ll use it for years to come.</p>
<p>I thought I would share a quick tutorial on how to make a wreath of your own.  It does take a little time, but it’s super easy!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath2.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Valentine's Day Wreath 2" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath2_thumb.jpg" alt="Valentine's Day Wreath 2" width="470" height="470" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Here’s what you need…</strong></p>
<p>You’ll need a 12” foam wreath, felt, glue, a bit of wide ribbon and LOTS of pins!</p>
<p>I cut 2” circles out of felt with my Big Shot scrapbook paper cutting tool.  It doesn’t work that well with felt, but it does fine with simple shapes.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath3.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Valentine's Day Wreath 3" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath3_thumb.jpg" alt="Valentine's Day Wreath 3" width="470" height="470" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Here’s all you need to know…</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Fold a circle in half.</li>
<li>Fold it again…hard work, isn’t it?</li>
<li>Pin it to the foam heart.</li>
<li>Continue pinning them right up against the last one.<a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath4.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Valentine's Day Wreath 4" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath4_thumb.jpg" alt="Valentine's Day Wreath 4" width="470" height="470" border="0" /></a></li>
</ul>
<p>I used over 100 circles but it will depend on how close together you pin them.  It’s such a quick project once you have all your materials gathered and ready to use.</p>
<p>I didn’t add any circles to the back because the wreath felt a bit heavy and why do extra work you can’t see. <img src='http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />   I added a bit of glue and a couple pins to hold the ribbon in place.  <strong>That’s it! </strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath5.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="Valentine's Day Wreath 5" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ValentinesDayWreath5_thumb.jpg" alt="Valentine's Day Wreath 5" width="470" height="394" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>It really is that simple and I’m sure you could use the same ruffle technique to create lots of beautiful projects all year long!  I’m a sucker for anything with ruffles…ha! <strong> An all white circle wreath would perfect for a winter.  </strong></p>
<p>Valentine’s Day is a great holiday to use handmade decorations all over your home.</p>
<p><strong>Have you made any wreaths?</strong>  I’d love to hear about them!</p>
<p>~Kim</p>

<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro1.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 1" width="500" height="375" /></p>
<p>Each design is small enough that it only takes me a hour or so to complete a project&#8230;well, maybe it would only be 30 minutes but I took a million photos! <em>I have a short attention span so I need small projects!</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;ll quickly show you just how easy it is to create an embroidered napkin.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro2.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 2" width="500" height="381" /></p>
<p>I washed and ironed two cloth napkins that I found on sale at Target. <strong>Ironing is by far the hardest part of this project</strong>. I thought about paying one of my children to do it for me, but thought better of it.</p>
<p>Just about anything with a tight weave like cotton, linen, and wool will work. Think about the fabulous pillow cases, shirts, baby bibs, purses, and aprons you can <strong>add a touch of style to with a little embroidery</strong>.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro3.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 3" width="500" height="354" /></p>
<p>I picked these sweet little cherries and cut around them. You want to cut close, but not too close! You just cut them right out of the book!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro4.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 4" width="500" height="448" /></p>
<p>Preheat the iron without steam. Iron the spot where you&#8217;ll place the transfer. Once it&#8217;s hot, take your transfer and lay it face down in the perfect spot. Immediately place your iron on it and hold it down for 5-10 seconds without moving it around. I like to push down on it pretty hard.</p>
<p>Lift a corner to check, and repeat heat until the transfer is dark enough for you. <strong>Transfers can be used more than once</strong>, but the number of times depends on the pressure you use while ironing.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro7.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 7" width="500" height="369" /></p>
<p><strong>Gather your supplies.</strong> I used red, green and brown embroidery floss, an embroidery hoop {size 4}, an embroidery needle with a large eye {size 8}, and small scissors. <em>Oh, and don&#8217;t forget a cup of coffee or tea!</em></p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro8.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 8" width="500" height="360" /></p>
<p>I decided I didn&#8217;t want my floss too thick, so I separated it in half and only used 3 stands. <em>Slowly</em> <em>pull them apart</em> or you&#8217;ll end up with a knotty mess! And it&#8217;s best to use 12-18 inches of floss to keep it easy to handle.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro9.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 9" width="500" height="376" /></p>
<p>Place the napkin over the smaller ring of your embroidery hoop and secure the large one over it tightly. Adjust the screw to hold it in place&#8230;you don&#8217;t want it moving all around while your trying to work.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro10.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 10" width="500" height="376" /></p>
<p>Thread your needle and tie a knot on one end. Start from the bottom and use a simple <a href="http://www.needlenthread.com/2006/10/embroidery-stitch-video-tutorial_24.html" target="_blank">backstitch</a>.</p>
<p>This is what the back will look like after you&#8217;ve embroidered a bit. When you run out of thread, just tie a knot and start with new thread. You can weave it through several stitches on the back and not tie a knot, but I&#8217;ve never tried it.</p>
<p>The transfer might not wash out, so stay on the line the best you can&#8230;it&#8217;s really not too hard!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro11.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 11" width="500" height="382" /></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a picture of it in progress and moving along quickly.</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;re done, remove the ring and iron with steam to remove the crease from the ring.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro12.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 12" width="500" height="416" /></p>
<p>Repeat all the steps a second time to make a matching one for a set.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretro13.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro 13" width="500" height="404" /></p>
<p><strong>Tie a ribbon around both of them and you have a fabulous gift ready to go!</strong></p>
<p>Iron on transfers make embroidery so much easier, and I love simple designs like palm trees and fruit. <strong>It&#8217;s a little touch of handmade goodness in the kitchen!</strong></p>
<p><img src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/stitchinretrobooks.jpg" alt="stitchin' retro books" width="500" height="417" /></p>
<p>I&#8217;ve used other embroidery books, but <strong>this one is my favorite</strong>!!! If you&#8217;re new to embroidery, you&#8217;ll find a simple stitch guide in this book to get you stichin&#8217; in minutes.</p>
<p>Just one more idea for an awesome handmade holiday!</p>

<p>With the holidays right around the corner, we&#8217;ve started thinking up some lovely DIY projects you and your family can do together.</p>
<p>I am happy to share with you one of my favorites, the Silhouette Advent Calendar.</p>
<p>This project is super easy and quick and it requires very few materials.</p>
<p>Materials:</p>
<ul>
<li>24 glassine bags (or any envelopes you may have at hand &#8211; try colorful envelopes for a festive feel)</li>
<li>6 clothespins</li>
<li>1 yard of baker&#8217;s twine</li>
<li>24 stickers (you can create your own illustrations for this projects or download our stickers <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/70801620/Advent-Stickers">here</a>)</li>
</ul>
<p>Instructions:</p>
<p>Start by printing out the stickers. You will need <a href="http://www.onlinelabels.com/Templates/OL325-template.htm">this template</a>.</p>
<p>Next start assembling the glassine bags. Pick out 24 creative gifts &#8211; they can vary from paper to small objects to candy &#8211; and depending on the recipient, even jewelry. Stuff the bags with your gifts.</p>
<p>Follow the 3 easy steps shown on this picture.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/steps.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="steps" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/steps_thumb.jpg" alt="steps" width="470" height="470" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Once you have all 24 bags made, start stacking them 4 by 4 &#8211; this way only a row of 6 bags show at first. Refer to this picture.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/assembled.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="assembled" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/assembled_thumb.jpg" alt="assembled" width="470" height="300" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Stack numbers 1,7,13,19 together and so forth. The idea behind this technique is that you can take one bag out revealing the next one and so forth. Plus it takes less room:)</p>
<p>Use the clothespins to hold the bags together. Next attach them all the the baker&#8217;s twine string and voila, you&#8217;ve made your advent calendar. Wasn&#8217;t that easy?</p>
<p><a href="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/assembled2.jpg"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;" title="assembled2" src="http://www.everythingetsy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/assembled2_thumb.jpg" alt="assembled2" width="470" height="343" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>If you would like to purchase the kit which includes everything shown on the pictures you can do so <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/84918488/diy-kit-silhouette-advent-calendar-by-le" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>Best,</p>
<p>Vana Chupp</p>

</p><div style="border: 1px dashed #8b8b8b; margin: 10px; padding: 5px;">Today we have a wonderful guest tutorial by <strong>Linda</strong> who blogs at <a href="http://www.burlapandblue.com/">Burlap and Blue</a>. As you&#8217;ll soon see, Linda is very creative and talented. She shares that talent often at her blog and today, here with us! Thanks, Linda! <em>~ Kim</em></div>
<p>Hey there! My name is Linda with burlap+blue! I am here today to talk about trends on Etsy, and to share a tutorial on <strong>how to make your own whitewashed typography flower pots!</strong></p>
<p>As an Etsy seller, it is my job (and yours!) to stay on top of the trends. I want to know what is popular, what is selling, and, conversely, what is not. One big trend I&#8217;ve noticed on Etsy and elsewhere lately? Typography. Typography is graphic, it&#8217;s versatile, it can go from being modern to shabby to farmhouse to whatever style you are currently into.</p>
<p>And, as a nod to one of the hottest trends around, I present you with these beauties&#8230;</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sJJ4OfVtI/AAAAAAAAALE/IGW-OG_OSpQ/s1600/DSC07727.JPG"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sJJ4OfVtI/AAAAAAAAALE/IGW-OG_OSpQ/s400/DSC07727.JPG" alt="" width="400" height="300" border="0" /></a></div>
<div><em>Easy to create, inexpensive and versatile.</em> Like them? See the how-to below&#8230;</div>
<div>
<p><em>Supplies Needed:</em></p>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><em>flower pots</em></li>
<li><em>paint</em></li>
<li><em>pencil</em></li>
<li><em>black marker or paint marker</em></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div><strong> Step 1:</strong> Take your run-of-the-mill clay flowerpots and use a mixture of white paint and water to whitewash them. My ratio was about 1:1, though I went over my pots twice to get a slightly deeper, darker color. I used a sponge brush to apply the color, and kept a wet paper towel handy to blend where needed. The best part about this step is that you are going for distressed and shabby, so there is no need for perfection. This step took me all of 5 minutes total.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sKANgBQPI/AAAAAAAAALM/E4mZl_LJrTg/s1600/DSC07719.JPG"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sKANgBQPI/AAAAAAAAALM/E4mZl_LJrTg/s320/DSC07719.JPG" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><strong> Step 2: </strong>Using a pencil, hand draw the outlines for your numbers. If you have stencils you can skip this step and just paint in your stencils! I found numbers online that I liked, and just did my best to hand draw them onto my pots&#8230;again, we are going for imperfect and handmade&#8230;I am not an artist at all, I just did the best I could with what little hand drawing skills I had, and I ended up being happy with the results.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sK4XUNSQI/AAAAAAAAALU/YlWMz_rArCI/s1600/DSC07723.JPG"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sK4XUNSQI/AAAAAAAAALU/YlWMz_rArCI/s320/DSC07723.JPG" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><strong> Step 3:</strong> This is the part where any true artist would be telling you to pull out the paints and get to paintin&#8217;! Unfortunately, I do not have a steady enough hand, or good enough paint brushes to do this next step with paint&#8230;believe me, I tried! But do you see those black sharpies in the picture below? Yep, I took my trusty black sharpies and outlined and colored in my numbers. I honestly don&#8217;t think there is a wrong way to do this, I just did what worked best for me. If the finished product looks too shiny and new for you, you can take a sanding sponge or piece of sandpaper to distress your pots further.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sL_vjLR-I/AAAAAAAAALc/XiFTn_bD4bs/s1600/DSC07724.JPG"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sL_vjLR-I/AAAAAAAAALc/XiFTn_bD4bs/s320/DSC07724.JPG" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; border: medium none initial;">I use these pots everywhere in my house&#8230;one is holding keys on my foyer table, another is holding a plant on my kitchen windowsill-truly a fun and versatile project. If you make a set, please let me know, I&#8217;d love to see!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; border: medium none initial;">And how have I applied what I learned about the current typography trend to my shop?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sNqigir0I/AAAAAAAAALk/T1TNMqGIYak/s1600/DSC07884.JPG"><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sNqigir0I/AAAAAAAAALk/T1TNMqGIYak/s320/DSC07884.JPG" alt="" border="0" /></a><a style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sOeAqZRWI/AAAAAAAAALs/tddFg4qmmT4/s1600/DSC07859.JPG"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UuGUYEPeAW8/S-sOeAqZRWI/AAAAAAAAALs/tddFg4qmmT4/s320/DSC07859.JPG" alt="" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em> Typography coasters and gift tags, of course!</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; border: medium none initial;">My shop specializes in vintage inspired goods for your home and life&#8230;these typography coasters and tags fit in just perfectly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left; border: medium none initial;">Thanks to Everything Etsy for allowing me to guest post here today.</div>
